The Wiki Creed

This is my wiki. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

My wiki is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

My wiki, without me, is useless. Without my wiki, I am useless. I must scribe my wiki true. I must write straighter than my detractor who is trying to stifle me. I must best him before he bests me. I will…

My wiki and I know that what counts in this exercise is not the words we type, the noise of our emotion, or the tack we take. We know that it is the communication that counts. We will count…

My wiki is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories, its abilities and its limitations. I will keep my wiki true, even as I am true. We will become part of each other. We will…

Before God, I swear this creed. My wiki and I are the defenders of our ethic. We are the masters of our detractors. We are the saviors of my life.

So be it, until victory equals understanding and there is no enemy, but peace!

Wiki Project, Part 2

Posted by aharrisr on March 20, 2013 in Assignments with Comments closed |

You will have two blog posts and edits due this upcoming week:

1. I expect you to do edits on the stubs that have been posted. I am not looking for a couple of deletions and a grammar check. I expect these changes to be substantial, meaning that you either do a bunch of small edits or one large one. At the very least, I expect you to add information, delete information, perform some kind of formatting, and add a link. The edits are due no later than midnight on Thursday, March 28th. Worth 25% of your grade.

At the end of the project, I expect each entry to do the following:

  •  Cover topic in depth with examples
  • Be error free
  • Contain original material
  • Be well organized with headings and subheadings (if needed) and make sense to the reader
  • Make excellent use of graphics and effects
  • Contain accurate grammar, spelling, and hyperlinking practices
  • Cite sources and link to them appropriately

3. Reflective Essay/Blog Post #3: To be written when all other parts of the project are complete. Due no later than midnight on Thursday, March 28th. Worth 10% of your grade.

Also, you will have readings and tweets due no later than Tuesday, April 2nd.

Upcoming Wiki Project Due Dates

Posted by aharrisr on March 8, 2013 in Assignments with Comments closed |

During Spring Break, you have three parts to the Wiki Project that are due:

1. Blog Post #1, due no later than midnight on March 10th: Post an entry to your blog about what your perception of a wiki is and your expectations of the project. No less than 200 words.

2. Wiki Stub: In your groups, decide on a topic based on the chapters your group was assigned. Construct an introductory wiki stub on the topic and post it to Wikispaces no later than midnight on Sunday, March 17th. Remember, this is not a cut and paste job. Cite any information you borrow accordingly.

3. Blog Post #3, due no later than midnight on Tuesday, March 19th: Describe the process your group went through constructing the wiki stub.

Please email me if you have any issues and/or questions.

Class on 2/21

Posted by aharrisr on February 22, 2013 in Uncategorized with Comments closed |

The assignments due in the upcoming week are the following:

1. Your photo manipulation project is due BEFORE CLASS on Thursday, Feb. 28th. Please remember there are two parts to the project: the image and the write up. The guidelines for both can be found here. I am looking for a demonstration of the the skills outlined and a thoughtful, substantial response to the questions. If you are having any issues with this project, please contact me and we will work through it. Do not wait until the night before the project is due.

2. You have two readings for next week. Remember your tweets–two per reading plus two responses to classmates. There are due on Tuesday, Feb. 26th before midnight.

3. Blog Post: I want you to explore the articles on Wikipedia a little deeper. Pick an article and analyze how well it may or may not exemplify all of the criteria we went over in class and is outlined in the readings. What would you add to the article? What would you edit out? Why? Post this response to your blog, along with a link to the entry, no later than midnight on Sunday, Feb. 24th.

Meme Project Guidelines

Posted by aharrisr on February 15, 2013 in Uncategorized with Comments closed |
  1. Go to http://www.quickmeme.com/memes/. This is a meme generator, which is the fast and easy way to make a meme. You can browse all of the templates and add your own words. If you are unsure of what is being signified by a template, go to knowyourmeme.com and look it up by name. You will get a detailed history and explanation of what the meme signifies.
  2. To make your own meme, choose a background/meme template. For example, if you want to make a Success Kid meme, choose Success Kid and look in the upper right hand corner. You will see a button that says “Add your own caption.”
  3. Add the caption but DO NOT SAVE AND SHARE the image (unless you want it added to the database. If you don’t, do a screenshot of the image. How to take a screenshot instructions are here. The default is to a Mac, but if you look at the navigation bar on the top, there is a tab for Windows to the left. Click on the Windows tab and it will tell you how to do a screenshot in Windows. Alternatively, you may find a blank template online and use Gimp to make your meme.
  4. Write an explanation of your meme and post it to one class member’s blog. Mainly, I am looking for the connection of the text to the meaning of the meme and the message you are trying to get across to the audience. I am also looking for a discussion of how this is a form of writing…or not. The assignment is due Sunday by midnight.

Remember, from here on out, tweets are due the Tuesday before class.

As always, contact me if you need to discuss anything/ask questions.
